About Kerü

We didn’t learn this city. We’re from it

Enrique Maldonado’s father worked as custodian and restorer of Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas — the fortress that took the Spanish more than a century to finish and that Cartagena has never stopped repairing. Enrique grew up around that work. Parts of the wall you’ll walk past on our City Tour were put back in place by his family.

Kerü grew out of that. We started because we kept watching visitors get marched through our city in groups of thirty, handed a rehearsed script, and moved along before they’d understood what they were looking at. Cartagena deserves better than that, and so do the people who travel a long way to see it. So we built the opposite: private, unhurried, told properly, and organised well enough that all you have to do is show up.

Our Values

Two things we refuse to compromise on

These aren’t aspirations on a wall. They’re the reasons guests write the reviews they write, and the reasons we sometimes turn down work that doesn’t fit.

Your pace, always

We have never once told a guest to hurry up. If you want to sit in Plaza de Santo Domingo for half an hour, we sit. If you walk slowly, we walk slowly — several of our guests have written specifically to thank us for that. A tour that ends when you’re ready is a completely different thing from a tour that ends at 4pm.

Custodians, not just guides

We’re a sustainable operator, and in Cartagena that means something specific: keeping the historic, artistic and cultural legacy of this city intact and telling its story honestly — the sieges and the piracy, but also the slave port and the people whose labour built the walls. We work with local historians, hire locally, and put money back into the neighbourhoods we bring visitors through.
